2011 Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race : Kinetic Sculptures are amphibious, human powered works of art custom built for the race. Each May, the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) hosts the East Coast Kinetic Sculpture Race Championship on the shore of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor in central Maryland. The eight-hour race covers 15 miles—mostly on pavement, but also including a trip into the Chesapeake Bay and through mud and sand. (source: http://kineticbaltimore.com May 2011)

Kayaker Overboard : Baltimore, June 02, 2011:
Tim Mowrer of Baltimore was kayaking in the Patapsco river near Fort McHenry when his kayak flipped over. He managed to swim to shore as Fire and Rescue crews arrived on the scene. After receiving advice from a park ranger to stay near the shore, he was allowed to get back in his canoe and paddle back to where he had parked. There was a small craft wind advisory on the bay, and wind might have been a factor in this instance. After recent several drownings in the area, it's good to see this episode ended well. Mowrer describes himself as a strong swimmer who has gone through similar experiences before. He was wearing a life jacket.

2011 African American Festival : The festival itself was massive, with something for everyone to do. Unfortunately I couldn't stay long due to problems from the sun and high humidity. I had been having a lot of shoots outside and I began to feel the effects during the festival. I went home after only a few minutes of shooting and later experienced symptoms of a mild heat stroke. I returned the next day but wasn't feeling well enough to stay long or wander around too much.
The amusement park rides area was busy and did more than anything else to make the festival a truly family event. I took most of the images there as I rested to get enough energy to walk the few blocks home.

Downtown Partnership in Center Plaza Jul 06 2011 : I've been meaning to attend the Music/Jazz in Center Plaza events held every Wednesdays during the summer in Center plaza and I finally got to on this day. The Wheely Good Smoothies folks were there handing out delicious, healthy smoothies made with pedal power. The last time I had a smoothie I enjoyed that much was at the Farmer's Marked in Decatur, Georgia.

Anyways, I took a few pictures and will try to attend more Downtown Partnership events to see more Baltimore cultural talent.

Mt Vernon 1st Thursdays July 07 2011 Concert : Organized by WTMD 89.7 radio and sponsored by several Baltimore establishments, 1st Thursdays Concert in the Park are popular summertime events held in Mt. Vernon near the Washington Monument. Rain, lightning and thunder prematurely brought this particular event to a halt, but not before the crowds had been treated to a rockin' good time with music, food, beer and wine.

This event featured Justin Jones, Sarah Lee & Johnny, and The Alternate Routes. Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake also stopped by.

8th Annual Fell's Point Olde Tyme Christmas- 2011

St Stanislaus Kostka : St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on Aliceanna and Ann Streets. The church was closed in 2000 after 111 years in service. After a lengthy court battle between its owners, the Conventual Franciscan Friars, who wanted to tear it down and allow for development of 23 $800,000 condominiums, and local residents and parishioners who wanted the area preserved for its historical and cultural significance. The church is now officially protected by a special zoning ordinance sponsored by the City of Baltimore’s Commission for Architectural and Historic Preservation (CHAP) and is currently on sale. The church's bells were dismounted from its bell tower on December 22, 2011.

Baltimore's 12th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade : Baltimore's 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade on January 15, 2012 along Martin Luther King Blvd. Though the sun shone uninhibitedly in the clear skies, the weather remained stubbornly cold aided by a relentless breeze. Crowds amassed along the parade route eager to watch and cheer dozens of participants including Baltimore's mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, several marching bands, and local organizations.

2012 Poe Toaster Stakeout : Several dozen people turned up at the grave of famous American writer Edgar Alan Poe on the anniversary of Poe's birth hoping to catch a glimpse of the shadowy Poe toaster. Temperatures fell sharply to below freezing, but it didn't keep a few impostors from making appearance. The first one came and left completely undetected by the crowd, the second was only seen upon exiting, and the third one came after I had left.

March 07 2012 Man Collapsed outside The Gallery, Downtown Baltimore : A man collapsed at the bus stop outside The Gallery mall downtown Baltimore. An off-duty officer driving by and a trauma doctor were the first to reach the scene and call for help. The man, identifying himself as Derrick, rose by his own strength and was later attended to by an ambulance crew, though he refused help other than the cleaning of his wounds. A can of duster air was found on him. He had collapsed on the can and put it in his pocket after he stood up.
